Brussels defence exhibition is "huge opportunity" for Belgium, says minister

The Bedex defence exhibition, which will take place for the first time at Brussels Expo in mid-March, represents a "huge opportunity" for Belgium's defence sector and industry. Defence minister Theo Francken said this on Tuesday at the presentation of the event, which will also be open to the general public.

From 12 to 14 March, the Brussels European Defense Exhibition (Bedex) aims to bring together professionals from across the sector, as well as those with a broader interest in defence. The first two days will be reserved for professionals, while the third day will be open to the public. More than 150 companies will be present, including around 50 Belgian firms. The exhibition is already fully booked.

Speaking at a well-attended press conference, Francken described the launch of Bedex as timely. Against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, the minister said Brussels, "the capital of Belgium, Europe and NATO", should also host a platform where companies, governments and armed forces can meet and potentially conclude agreements.

Mark Rutte to attend

NATO secretary general Mark Rutte has already confirmed his attendance on the opening day. Invitations have been sent to EU leaders and Western Defence ministers, while chief of Defence Frederik Vansina has invited his international counterparts. Prime minister Bart De Wever will attend, and other federal ministers have also been invited.

Belgium’s FN Herstal and the American conglomerate RTX - best known for its Patriot missile systems - are acting as the main sponsors. FN Browning Group CEO Julien Compère said it made sense to support such an event as a sponsor. "NATO remains the cornerstone of our defence, and European industry has a role to play in this," he said.

The organisers intend to make Bedex an annual event and to expand it over time. Its location in Brussels, described as a gateway to Belgium, Europe and NATO, is intended to distinguish it from comparable defence fairs in London and Paris.
