Brussels business federation reaffirms support for metro line 3 project

Brussels business federation Voka Metropolitan has reaffirmed its support for the troubled metro line 3 project, it announced on Wednesday. The organisation supports the completion of the first phase of the project as planned, while calling for a reassessment of the second phase, in line with the position of Brussels Budget Minister Sven Gatz (Open VLD).
Metro Line 3, a multi-billion euro project, aims to provide a direct metro link from Forest to Evere, cutting across Brussels. Originally scheduled to be completed by 2030, the line has faced increasing delays and rising costs. Today, the total cost is estimated at €4.7 billion - double the 2021 estimate.
Budgetary uncertainty
Budgetary uncertainty in the Brussels-Capital Region and repeated construction setbacks have led many to question whether the project will ever be completed. Some have suggested halting the project to avoid further financial burdens. Federal Interior minister Bernard Quintin (MR) has suggested that a pause in construction may be necessary.

But Voka Metropolitan insists that the project remains vital for the region's mobility and long-term economic development. Director René Konings acknowledges the growing challenges, but stresses the importance of completing the first phase, from Albert Station in Forest to North Station, given the significant investment already made. The cost of this section has already risen from €700 million to over €1.3 billion.
The second phase, from Gare du Nord to Bordet in Evere, should be reassessed in terms of budget and phasing, says Konings. However, he stresses that the completion of the entire Line 3 should remain a priority for the future.
