Brussels becomes giant pedestrian zone for Car-Free Sunday

Cities and towns across Belgium will see their streets freed up for pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, horses and more for the latest edition of Car-Free Sunday, the traditional highlight of Mobility Week.
In Brussels, all streets will be car-free from 9:30 until 19:00, making it the largest car-free zone in Europe, according to the Brussels Mobility regional administration. Buses, trams and metros operated by STIB/MIVB will run free of charge all day and the frequency of public transport will be increased.
Activities in the capital include heritage tours, music, children’s workshops, circus classes and bike repairs.

More than 50 Belgian cities and municipalities are organising a Car-Free Sunday this year. Antwerp, Bruges and Leuven are also taking part today. Hasselt banned cars from the city for the day last weekend, while other places did so on Saturday.
Rail operator SNCB/NMBS is offering a Mobility Ticket, a return ticket between any two stations for 8 euros. Flemish transport operator De Lijn is offering a discounted day ticket for families throughout Mobility Week: up to five people travelling together can use buses and trams for 24 hours for 12 euros.
Mobility Week – from 16 to 22 September – is also held throughout Europe.
