Brussels Airlines to add five more Airbus A320neo aircraft

Brussels Airlines has announced plans to add five new Airbus A320neo aircraft to its fleet, bringing the total number of this model to 13.

The carrier received its first A320neo at the end of 2023, and it currently operates five of the aircraft, with a further three due to arrive in the coming months. The additional five aircraft are scheduled for delivery from 2027, pending approval from the airline’s board of directors.

Designed for short- and medium-haul routes, the A320neo offers improved efficiency compared with older models. These aircraft produce lower CO2 emissions, generate less noise and provide more storage space for cabin baggage.

Four of the five newly ordered aircraft will replace older planes, while one will expand the fleet. “This significant investment reflects Brussels Airlines’ ambition to reduce its ecological footprint, enhance passenger comfort, and pursue sustainable growth,” the company said in a statement.

The airline is also preparing to expand its long-haul fleet of Airbus A330s to 13 aircraft, and to introduce upgraded cabins across its intercontinental network from 2027. At Brussels Airport, its flagship lounge, The Loft, is set to undergo a complete renovation.

Successful summer

This announcement follows a successful summer season for the Lufthansa subsidiary. During the holiday period, Brussels Airlines carried almost 2 million passengers on just under 13,000 flights, a 12 per cent increase on the previous year.

The busiest week, from 21-27 July, saw 235,000 passengers travel on 1,500 flights, with the Tomorrowland festival contributing to the peak.

The most popular destinations were Málaga, Barcelona, Geneva, Lisbon and Porto. Although punctuality declined due to factors such as strikes by air traffic controllers in France and Italy, Brussels Airlines said that shorter check-in and baggage drop-off times were achieved at Brussels Airport, with record numbers of passengers using automated systems.
