Bruges to celebrate 800 years of history with Belfry light show

To celebrate this year's Flemish Community Day, Bruges is hosting light shows on the Belfry. Spectators will be guided through the rich history of Bruges and Flanders through a combination of light, sound, and projections in the Market Square.
From 1 to 11 July, the Market Square will host “The Belfry as Storyteller – The Story of Bruges”. Spanning 22 shows, the light spectacle will explore 800 years of the city's history, as seen through the eyes of the monument itself.
It will recount the entire history of Bruges, from the Holy Blood and the establishment of the world's first bourse to its current status as a Flemish economic and tourist hub. The show will also address darker chapters, such as the plague, periods of persecution, and social inequality.
The event is organised by the non-profit 11 July-Komitee Brugge and is supported by the City of Bruges and the Flemish Government. The storytelling will be handled by the Bruges-based company Alfavision - best known for the Historium tourist attraction - while PRG will be responsible for the lights and sounds.
Six months of work
"A director, scriptwriters, voice actors, animators and historians worked on the project for six months," says Els De Rooy of Alfavision. "In the process, we also used the latest technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to create compelling and substantive content."
"The Belfry as Storyteller – The Story of Bruges" will take place in Bruges' Market Square from Tuesday 1 July to Friday 11 July. There will be two shows each evening at 22:30 and 23:00, preceded by a carillon concert at 21:30. Entry is free of charge.
