Bruges to ban amplified sound on tourist boats from 2029

Tourist boats on Bruges' canals will no longer be allowed to use amplified sound during tours from 2029, following years of complaints from residents about noise pollution. The measure was announced by the city and still requires approval from the municipal council.

More than one million tourists take boat trips on the Bruges canals each year. Residents living along the waterways have long complained about the repeated commentary provided during the tours, particularly when delivered through loudspeakers.

"It is a matter of balance and quality," alderman for tourism Minou Esquenet (CD&V) said. "We entered into consultation with the stakeholders involved and attempted to reach maximum agreement between the wishes of the city council, the interests of our residents, and those of the shipping companies."

Time to adapt

The new rules will not take effect until 2029, giving operators time to adapt. "This gives shipping companies enough time to adapt to the new conditions. They are also free to choose how they do so," Esquenet added.

Boat operators have voiced concerns about the new rules, arguing that sound amplification is already limited and warning that alternatives such as headsets could prove impractical given passenger numbers and weather conditions.

The city also confirmed previously announced environmental measures. All tourist boats must be fully electric by 1 January 2028, while reserve vessels will have until 2030 to comply. According to the city, 16 of the 20 active tourist boats are already electric.

Ticket prices for canal tours will increase from 15 to 17 euros in 2027.
