Bruges Belfry to be launched as Lego model

World-renowned for its well-preserved medieval city centre, the West Flemish city of Bruges will soon see one of its most iconic monuments launched in Lego form. Fans of Lego and history buffs alike will be able to build their very own scale model of the famous bell tower, writes Flemish public broadcaster VRT NWS.
Many landmarks from over the world have in the past already been immortalized as Lego sets, such as the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Big Ben in London. The East Flemish city of Ghent was already present in this list, with a model of Ghent university library’s Book Tower having been available for some time. The Bruges Belfry is now set to join this list of iconic monuments.
The model will measure 25 centimeters in height, be 18 centimeters wide and 12 centimeters deep.
For the development of the model, the city of Bruges is collaborating with the Dutch company LM Models. The Bruges Belfry kit will not be part of the official range of Lego products, however. “But official Lego blocks are indeed used. It will become a real collector's item”, Bruges City Alderman responsible for Culture Nico Blontrock (Christian democrats) told VRT NWS.
If puzzled together correctly, the model will measure 25 centimeters in height, be 18 centimeters wide and 12 centimeters deep. This makes the Lego-version of the Belfry 300 times smaller than the real-life medival building, which towers over the Bruges city centre with its is 83 metres in height. Despite this relatively small size, the designers of the Lego model set “were able to retain a good few of the details that make the original belfry so special”, VRT NWS reports. The set will contain a total of 887 parts.
