British PM wants 'more pragmatic and mature' relationship with EU
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to build a "more pragmatic and mature relationship" with the European Union, he said Tuesday on the eve of his first visit to Brussels since taking office.
"The UK is undeniably stronger when it works in lockstep with its closest international partners. This has never been more important - with war, conflict and insecurity all knocking on Europe’s door," Starmer said in a statement.
"We will only be able to tackle these challenges by putting our collective weight behind them, which is why I am so determined to put the Brexit years behind us and establish a more pragmatic and mature relationship with the European Union," he said.
Resetting relations
"Better co-operation with the EU will deliver the benefits the British people deserve – securing our borders, keeping us safe and boosting economic growth," he added.
Starmer wants to negotiate a new security pact with the EU, cooperate more on tackling illegal immigration and, and resolve trade disputes. He has repeatedly said he wants to "reset" relations with the EU, insisting that does not mean reversing Brexit.
