British football supporter dies after being hit by train in Ghent

A British football supporter has died after he was struck by a train in Ghent on Thursday night. The West Ham United fan had climbed onto a train line near Gent-Sint-Pieters station.

The 57-year-old was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries. The East Flanders public prosecutor's office described it as "an unfortunate accident".

Many British supporters travelled to Ghent this week for the Conference League match between West Ham and KAA Gent on Thursday. The accident disrupted train services near the station, but these were restored at around 3.00.
