Bpost to resume sending parcels to the US

From Monday, customers will once again be able to send parcels to the US via bpost, the postal company announced on Friday. Sending a parcel will however become more expensive.
Bpost suspended parcel deliveries to the US at the end of August due to uncertainty about new American rules for international shipments. Other postal companies took similar measures.
Now a solution has been found. Bpost has introduced a new procedure that complies with the changed US customs requirements.
Customers pay the shipping costs for the parcel and the applicable import duties, plus a processing fee. This means that sending a parcel will become more expensive. It is difficult to say by how much, according to spokesperson Mathieu Goedefroy. It depends on the value of what is being sent. This calculation is made at the post office counter. The import duties go to the US treasury.
Packages marked as gifts – from one private individual to another – with a value of less than 100 dollars are exempt from import duties. Only a fixed processing fee of 2 dollars applies.
The new rules apply to private individuals and small businesses. According to the postal service, this only affects a very small percentage of international shipments. Nothing will change for large professional customers.
