Biniam Girmay first African to win major cycling race in Flanders

For the first time ever, a major cycling race in Flanders has been won by an athlete from Africa: 21 year old Biniam Girmay Hailu, from Eritrea. A well-deserved win, observers agree.
Girmay won the 'classic' Ghent-Wevelgem in the sprint, against 3 others. With this win, he confirmed the hopes some placed in him. He's seen as very talented, he's the vice-worldchampion of the young racers.
After his victory, Girmay returns home, to his wife and daughter, although next week the biggest of all Flemish one-day races takes place, the tour of Flanders. But the Eritrean is preparing for the Giro of Italy, his first major multi-day tour.
The international cycling association will also be very happy with the win of an African, since this UCI wants to make cycling a more global sports. Most champions of the recent decades come from Western Europe. Biniam Girmay may have changed this today.
