Belgium showcase top form ahead of Hockey World Cup with Sultan Azlan Shah Cup victory

Belgium's national men's hockey team have won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. The Red Lions beat India 1-0 in the final of the high-profile tournament, which served as preparation for the Hockey World Cup.
Belgium opened their campaign last Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Canada, the only match they failed to win. Four consecutive victories carried them to the final: 3-2 against India, 6-2 against South Korea, 9-1 against Malaysia and 5-1 against New Zealand.
The Lions topped the group stage, finishing ahead of India, who also earned a spot in the final. As in their previous match, the final was a close affair. However, it was Belgium who were victorous thanks to a strike by Thibeau Stockbroekx in the 34th minute.
This was only the second time Belgium had appeared in the cup. The team made their debut in May 2008, finishing sixth while preparing for the Beijing Olympics.
For the Red Lions - former Olympic and world champions - both the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and the upcoming Pro League fixtures in December are key preparation steps for the Hockey World Cup in August 2026. Belgium is hosting the tournament, along with the Netherlands.
