Belgium investigates suspected political interference by Morocco
The Brussels public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into possible Moroccan political interference in Belgium, RTBF and Le Soir reported on Friday.
The Central Office for Combating Corruption (CDBC) of the federal judicial police drew up a first official report on the case at the end of December. The report includes revelations made in a TV documentary by Belgium's French-language public broadcaster RTBF.
The documentary revealed instances of Moroccan influence, interference and possible corruption in Belgium. The interference is said to have focused mainly on the issue of Western Sahara, a disputed territory on the northwest coast of Africa that is largely occupied by Morocco.
At the end of March, the Brussels public prosecutor's office opened an investigation. It is unclear on what exact grounds the investigation was opened. For the time being, the public prosecutor's office is not commenting further.
