Belgium confirms Eurovision participation as European boycott grows

Belgium will take part in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, after broadcaster RTBF confirmed it will send an act. The artist is not yet known. Flemish VRT had already said it would broadcast the event.
RTBF said its participation is linked to a “clear stance” on the protection of civilians and journalists in Gaza. RTBF director Jean-Paul Philippot wrote to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to call for safeguards for journalists and civilians, and denounce restrictions on freedom of information.
The announcement comes as a growing number of European public broadcasters pull out because Israel is allowed to compete in 2026. Spain’s RTVE, Ireland’s RTE, Slovenia’s RTVSLO and the Netherlands’ AVROTROS have all confirmed a boycott. They cite the humanitarian situation in Gaza, concerns about press freedom and what they describe as political interference in last year’s contest as reasons.
In Belgium, political pressure is also mounting. Opposition parties Ecolo, PS and PTB-PVDA have called for a national boycott. They argue the EBU’s position on Israel contradicts European values and international law. Flemish politicians have also voiced criticism: Vooruit MP Katia Segers suggested that VRT “better not broadcast” the contest if Israel participates. CD&V leader Sammy Mahdi labelled the decision “ridiculous” and said Belgium should withdraw.
Israel’s participation was approved on Thursday after a secret vote within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The EBU has introduced new voting rules to address tensions, including stricter limits on televoting and the return of jury votes in the semi-finals.
The Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Austria in May 2026.
