Belgium condemns latest Israeli measures in West Bank

Belgian Foreign minister Maxime Prévot has condemned recent measures by the Israeli government aimed at tightening its control over the occupied West Bank. "Peace can only be achieved through respect for the law and for each other," Prévot wrote on X on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Israel announced a series of measures that would strengthen its control over zones A and B of the occupied Palestinian territory and facilitate land purchases to expand settlements. The plans also include taking control of religious sites in the area and building additional settlements in Hebron.
Prévot described the newly announced measures as being in breach of international law. "Such measures are contrary to international law, UN Security Council Resolution 2334 and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice," he said, stressing that respect for the law is essential for any lasting peace.
International condemnation
The policy of Israel's far-right government in the West Bank has repeatedly drawn international criticism, as it is seen as further undermining the prospects of a two-state solution. On Monday, eight Arab and Islamic countries, including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, said Israel is "accelerating attempts at its illegal annexation and the displacement of the Palestinian people."
The United States, one of Israel's closest allies, also opposes the decision. "A stable West Bank keeps Israel secure and is in line with this administration’s goal to achieve peace in the region," a White House official said this week. Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is scheduled to meet president Donald Trump in the US on Wednesday.
