Belgium aims to lift 93,000 children out of poverty by 2030

Belgium aims to lift at least 93,000 children out of poverty by 2030. This is stated at the national action plan submitted to the European Commission this week, reports Minister Karine Lalieux (PS), who is federally responsible for combating poverty.
Every European member state must implement the EU Child Guarantee into policy. The Child Guarantee aims to promote equal opportunities for children at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
In Belgium, one in five children is confronted with poverty.
"This figure is unacceptable. We must continue to focus on the fight against poverty among children and their parents. Inclusive and universal accessibility ensure equal opportunities for all children. This is especially true for the group that experiences social exclusion as a result of poverty or any other form of inequality", emphasizes the Belgian action plan.
In order to achieve the target figure, they will work on four axes. Belgium wants to ensure that vulnerable children have real and free access to quality education; that there is care for young children; that there are educational and school activities and that a healthy meal is guaranteed every school day.
The intention is to continue working on recommendations. Vulnerable children must also have effective and free access to quality health care, they must have access to sufficient and healthy food, and to adequate housing. Belgium holds the presidency of the European Union in 2024 and the document promises that poverty reduction will be a priority.
