Belgian Vanthourenhout named sporting director of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe cycling team

Belgian Sven Vanthourenhout has been appointed sporting director of the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe cycling team, the German team has announced.
Vanthourenhout, 44, will start his new role with the development team. He will assist Cesare Benedetti in the Tour Alsace, which begins on Wednesday. He will focus on the U23 races for the rest of the season and take over management of the team in WorldTour events from next season.
“I'm very excited to take on this new role and to join such a forward-thinking team,” said Vanthourenhout. “I’ve always been passionate about working with a clear goal and ambition, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe adventure.”
Vanthourenhout began working for the Belgian federation in 2017, becoming coach of the national cyclocross team. He also led the road team from 2021. Under his leadership, Remco Evenepoel won the road race at the 2022 World Championships and took gold in both the road race and time trial at last year's Olympics in Paris.

Vanthourenhout left Belgian Cycling at the end of last year, after Tim Merlier won the European title in Hasselt. He replaces Rolf Aldag, whose departure was made official at the end of July.
Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe’s Florian Lipowitz took third place in this year’s Tour de France, with the German also winning the best young rider classification.
