Belgian holidaymakers increasingly take safety and climate change into account

Almost three-quarters of Belgians are planning to travel between June and September. According to research by Europ Assistance, global instability and climate change are increasingly influencing their holiday choices.
A recent survey by Ipsos and Europ Assistance shows that 73 per cent of Belgians are planning to travel this summer. This year, 57 per cent of those surveyed have taken the risk of armed conflict and political instability into account when choosing a destination. That is more than double the figure from three years ago, when 24 per cent said the same.
Countries currently experiencing armed conflicts, such as Russia, Israel and Ukraine, top the list of destinations Belgians actively avoid. The United States is also becoming less popular among Belgian travellers. That decline is mostly attributed to the hostile actions of US president Donald Trump, travel agencies said earlier this year.
Climate change is another concern. While many Belgians still chase the sun, they are increasingly wary of extreme heat and unpredictable weather. Though 32 per cent of those surveyed expressed concern about the carbon footprint of travel, only a quarter are willing to adjust their holiday habits.
Big spenders
Cost remains an important factor, but Belgian travellers continue to rank among the biggest spenders in Europe. With an average budget of 2,710 euros per household, Belgians trail only the Swiss and the British when it comes to vacation spending.
Europe remains the top destination for most Belgians, with France, Belgium and Spain in the lead. Long-haul travel is gaining popularity compared to last year.
September is also becoming an increasingly popular travel month, chosen by 22 per cent of respondents, partly due to more affordable prices and a lower risk of heat waves. July remains the top month for holidays at 24 per cent, followed by August with 20 per cent.
