Belgian research vessel Belgica set for busy year at sea

Belgium’s research vessel Belgica is back at sea with 34 missions planned for 2026, Science Policy minister Vanessa Matz confirmed on Wednesday during a visit to the ship at Zeebrugge naval base. Defence minister Theo Francken also attended.
The vessel returns to service after being docked since June 2024 due to a legal dispute with French shipping company Genavir. An agreement reached last October allowed the Belgica to undergo maintenance and resume operations.
The Belgica carries out scientific research on marine life, seabeds, water quality, fish stocks, and human impact on the oceans. It also serves as a training platform for navy officers and sailors, testing teamwork, navigation, and new technologies like drones.

“I am delighted the Belgica is sailing again,” said minister Matz. “Its schedule is almost fully booked, supporting both research and naval training.”
Minister Francken added: “The ship is vital for training new sailors and giving them sea experience. Its return is very welcome.”
The Belgica’s missions this year promise a full calendar of scientific exploration and operational exercises.
