Belgian politician Charles Michel re-elected as president of the European Council
The European Council re-elected Charles Michel (46) as President for a second term, from 1 June 2022 to 30 November 2024. The former Prime Minister of Belgium was also re-appointed as President of the Euro Summit.

After winnning the elections in 2019, the intention for Michael was to remain at his position for five years. Hence why there were no opponents this time. He was unanimously re-elected by the 27 leaders.
Charles Michel is only the third full-time President of the European Council following Belgian Herman Van Rompuy and Poland's Donald Tusk after the creation of the post on 1 December 2009 under the Treaty of Lisbon.
Michel studied law at the University of Brussels and decided to run in the elections soon after university. A year after his election as a member of the federal parliament in 1999 he became the Walloon Minister for Interior Affairs and Civil Service.
