Belgian parliament calls for firmer stance against China

The Belgian Parliament calls for a tougher stance against China, in a new resolution drafted by the green party, and supported by the other members of the Federal Government. The resolution comes in response to the election of John Lee in Hong Kong, wrote De Standaard on Tuesday. The appointment of the Beijing loyalist is widely seen as a move by the Chinese government to tighten its grip on the city.
The new Hong Kong security law is another cause for concern. Article 38 states that this law not only applies to Hong Kong citizens, but to anyone in Hong Kong. Even foreign citizens outside of its borders can be prosecuted for crimes against Hong Kong. This includes Belgian citizens.
The resolution asks for sanctions against Chinese individuals who violate human rights, and for a better screening process regarding Chinese investments. Technology companies Dahua and Hikvision, who for example provide cameras to Belgian hospitals and government buildings, should be investigated to ensure they do not share their data with the Chinese government.
"Any Hong Kong student who applauds democracy and freedom on social media can be arrested as a terrorist - and so can any citizen of another nationality,' said MP Wouter De Vriendt (Groen), who tabled the resolution. "That cannot go unpunished."
