Belgian mini-supermarket named best organic retailer on European Organic Day
A mini supermarket from Ans, in the Belgian province of Liège, was named one of the eight winners of the first European awards for the organic sector on Friday. La Ferme à l'Arbre de Liège was awarded the title of Best Organic Retailer.
The awards were presented on the occasion of the EU's second Organic Day. The winners, the European Commission said, "symbolise the growth and innovation of the European organic sector and value chain, and the sector's contribution to reducing the environmental and climate impact of agriculture".
The Liège-based mini supermarket La Ferme à l'Arbre de Liège came out on top in the retail category. Located on a farm, it has been selling regional organic products such as meat and flour since 1978. The shop focuses on sustainable and circular production, uses green electricity, avoids packaging and limits transport emissions by sourcing locally.
The winners "symbolise the growth and innovation of the European organic sector and value chain, and the sector's contribution to reducing the environmental and climate impact of agriculture"
The awards were presented by a jury composed of representatives from the various EU institutions, agricultural umbrella organisation COPA-Cogeca and IFOAM Organics Europe, the organic food and farming sector association.
