Belgian killed in knife attack in Bad Hönningen

A Belgian citizen was killed in a knife attack in the German town of Bad Hönningen on Saturday, the Belgian Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs confirmed to Belga on Monday.

A man armed with a knife killed one person and injured several others in the village of Bad Hönningen, a town in western Germany near Bonn and Koblenz, DPA reported on Saturday.

The victim's nationality was confirmed following a report by the Belgian newspaper Sudinfo. The FPS did not provide further details "in order to respect the privacy of the persons concerned".

"The FPS Foreign Affairs in Brussels and the Belgian embassy in Berlin are closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with the local authorities. The family will also be contacted," it said.

Authorities in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which borders Belgium, were unable to provide any further information about the incident, the identity of the alleged perpetrator or the severity of the victims' injuries.
