Hugo Huyghebaert has not been heard from since 26 March.

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry is aware of this disappearance and is monitoring the situation closely, in conjunction with our consulate general in Guangzhou,” the ministry told Belga, adding that it was unable to provide further details “for reasons of privacy protection”.

Huyghebaert was visiting the town of Sanba in Shangri-La, southern China. According to a missing person’s notice issued on Friday at the request of the Namur public prosecutor’s office, he left the Haba Xiyinge guesthouse at around 11:00 on 26 March with the intention of hiking in the Tiger Leaping Gorge, a canyon through which the Yangtze river flows.

He is 1.80m tall and slim, with short, wavy brown hair and a beard. He was wearing grey hiking clothes and was carrying a rucksack with a green cover when he was last seen.

Belgian and Chinese investigators are asking anyone who may have seen or communicated with Huyghebaert, or who is planning to visit the area soon and could provide information, to contact police at avisderecherche@police.belgium.eu, using an online form or the freephone number 0800/30.300.

Related news
<div id=\"bookmark-ab2992ba-801a-4768-86f9-57ba1b7fded3\"\n class=\"release-content-bookmark release-content-bookmark--horizontal\">\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__thumbnail\"\n href=\"http://prez.ly/o67d\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" style=\"background-image: url(https://prezly.imgix.net/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.uc.assets.prezly.com%2Ffdcbac67-660c-4abb-a1fa-1dd2bbe13ef9%2F-%2Fcrop%2F497x261%2F0%2C139%2F-%2Fpreview%2F?ar=1%3A1&fit=crop&s=1c7a5afaec916f87baa91a8068fabd68)\"\n >\n \n
\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__title\"\n href=\"http://prez.ly/o67d\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"bookmark\"\n data-track=\"Story WebBookmark Click\"\n data-placement=\"content\"\n data-id=\"ab2992ba-801a-4768-86f9-57ba1b7fded3\"\n >\n Remains found in Tasmania provisionally identified as missing Li\u00e8ge woman C\u00e9line Cremer \n \n
\n Human remains found in Tasmania have been provisionally identified as those of missing Belgian woman C\u00e9line Cremer, the Australian state\u2019s police...
\n \n <a href=\"https://www.belganewsagency.eu/\"\n target=\"_blank\"\n rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"\n class=\"release-content-bookmark__provider\"\n >\n \n belganewsagency.eu \n
\n
\n<div id=\"bookmark-2e96bcef-6030-4308-b7a7-dd245ad70005\"\n class=\"release-content-bookmark release-content-bookmark--horizontal\">\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__thumbnail\"\n href=\"http://prez.ly/h6ud\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" style=\"background-image: url(https://prezly.imgix.net/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.uc.assets.prezly.com%2Fd89dec70-e92f-4a5b-ae89-1ae27fc2be66%2F-%2Fpreview%2F600x600%2F?ar=1%3A1&fit=crop&s=3db2f7b867d4988c19feff31416c0498)\"\n >\n \n
\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__title\"\n href=\"http://prez.ly/h6ud\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"bookmark\"\n data-track=\"Story WebBookmark Click\"\n data-placement=\"content\"\n data-id=\"2e96bcef-6030-4308-b7a7-dd245ad70005\"\n >\n Chief of missing persons unit looks back on 30 years of investigations \n \n
\n The Federal Police Missing Persons Unit marks its 30th anniversary on Thursday.
