Belgian foreign minister launches strategic partnership with Qatar in Doha

Belgian foreign minister Maxime Prévot has on Monday in Doha launched a strategic partnership between Belgium and Qatar in areas such as politics, economics, energy, security and humanitarian aid. During his visit, the foundations were also laid for an exchange of expertise concerning conflict mediation.
In Qatar's capital Doha, Belgian foreign minister Prévot met with the Qatari prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, and with the minister of state for regional affairs Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi. Together, they agreed on a new strategic partnership between Belgium and Qatar.
The strategic dialogue focuses on five areas: political and diplomatic relations; economic cooperation and investment; security and counterterrorism; energy and energy transition; and humanitarian aid and international cooperation.
This structured framework should amongst others strengthen Belgium's role as a major player in the energy sector, deepen cooperation in the fight against violent extremism, and make governments and businesses more efficient through investments in artificial intelligence. An agreement to prevent double taxation is also on the agenda.
In addition, minister Prévot discussed the possibility of inviting Qatari companies to visit Belgium, as a follow-up to the recent mission of 44 Belgian companies to Qatar.
Mediation in conflicts
Mediation and conflict resolution were also discussed at length, given the important role Qatar plays in the Middle East and beyond. Belgium is committed to sharing experiences and expertise in mediation with Qatar, so that both countries can contribute to solutions in various regions.
Finally, a joint declaration of intent was announced, as well as the establishment of a Belgian-Qatari task force that will develop projects in the field, amongst others concerning the protection of women's rights and the prevention of sexual violence in conflict situations.
