Belgian embassy for Iran remains in Baku for now: ‘Ceasefire fragile and uncertain’

The Belgian embassy for Iran will remain in the Azerbaijani capital Baku for the time being, the ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed. The embassy in Tehran was closed a month ago and relocated to Baku due to the conflict in the Middle East. Many other European countries also took a similar decision because of the war.

Meanwhile, following the announcement of the ceasefire between Iran and the US, the Spanish government has decided to reopen the Spanish embassy in Tehran to “support and strengthen” the peace talks. Belgium is not doing so for the time being.

“The announced ceasefire with Iran remains fragile and uncertain for the time being,” declared the ministry of Foreign Affairs. “No decision has yet been taken regarding the possible physical reopening of our embassy in Tehran.”

The ministry says it is monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis and is also consulting with its European partners. “But the safety of our staff and our compatriots remains our absolute priority.”
