Belgian company to build 1,4 km tunnel in Copenhagen

The Belgian construction company Besix has won a contract to build a 1,4 km tunnel in the Danish capital Copenhagen. This was announced on Friday by Besix.

Besix is the lead contractor in a consortium with the company MT Højgaard Denmark. They were awarded the € 346 million contract by the Danish road authority Vejdirektoratet.

The road tunnel, of which 700 metres will lie underwater, will connect the Østerbro district with the capital's ports Svanemøllehavn and Nordhavn. The tunnel will "improve access to port activities in the area and remove heavy traffic from the rest of the road network in Østerbro", Besix announced.

Construction, which is scheduled to begin in September, will take about five years.

Besix previously built the Crown Princess Mary Bridge in Frederikssund on behalf of the Danish Road Administration. The bridge, completed in 2019, was Besix's first project in Denmark. The company, based in Brussels, is the largest construction group in Belgium and consistently ranks in the ENR top 100 worldwide in terms of contractors.
