Belgian comic culture takes centre stage at BD Comic Strip Festival

From 8 to 10 September, the Gare Maritime in Brussels will host the BD Comic Strip Festival, where comic fans can attend signings, meet authors and watch the traditional giant balloon parade. This year's edition is dedicated to manga, with a new themed area opened for the occasion.
In honour of the 77th anniversary of publishing house Le Lombard, an exhibition will be organised on the past, present and future of the publisher, known for the Thorgal series. "You will get an overview of 77 years of family comics, the genesis of Le Lombard, the pioneers and heroes of the publishing house," says visit.brussels in a press release.
Exhibition extended
The ODYSSEE exhibition presents the Blake and Mortimer comic strip heritage in its aesthetic, cultural and historical context. Statues of De Kat (The Cat) in Warande Park in Brussels will also remain on display. The exhibition has been extended especially for the festival. Visitors can also admire giant balloon comic figures.
Two exhibitions dedicated to contemporary alternative comic artists, German Max Baitinger and French Benoit Carbonnel, are also on the programme.
"Publishers and authors have put together a programme with many encounters around the iconic comic strip heroes"
There will also be around 200 book signings at the Gare Maritime in Tour & Taxis. "Publishers and authors have put together a programme with many encounters around the iconic comic strip heroes," says visit.brussels.
