Belgian coach believes in chances of squad reaching play-offs at Women's EURO 2022

Five years ago, the Red Flames didn't make it to the play-offs at their European Championship debut in the Netherlands. To do better in England in the coming weeks, they must beat Iceland or Italy in their group. France seems to be too tall an order. Coach Ives Serneels believes that his team can reach the top two of the group.
The Flames (19th place on the FIFA ranking) will debut on Sunday in Manchester against Iceland (FIFA 17). Then France (FIFA 3) and Italy (FIFA 14) await. "It's a cliché, I realise that, but we have to take it match by match," said Serneels. "I am confident that against a good team like Iceland we will be ready to defend our country with as much dignity as possible for 90 minutes. The belief is there that we can win that match."
According to the national coach, Iceland and Italy are "countries that have proven themselves in the past". "But if we are at our best, we can win from them. If there's something missing, they are countries that will take advantage of that."
In any case, France seems too strong, as Serneels also seems to realise. "They are one of the favourites to win the tournament," he stresses. "But, that is only our second match. We have watched them of course, but the focus now is on Iceland. After that, we'll see how we can fight the French."
The Red Flames finished their first training session on Wednesday evening. Serneels expects all 25 players to be able to play on Sunday.
