Belgian and Spanish Prime Ministers meet to discuss Europe's energy problem

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is in Brussels today for a meeting with his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo. With this visit, Sánchez will continue his efforts to highlight Europe's energy problem.

Even before the war in Ukraine broke out, Spain had already called for an EU-wide response to rising prices. Prime Minister Sánchez is expected to call for greater intervention in the wholesale energy market at the EU summit later this week. But while the Commission will present leaders with a proposal of measures, it is unlikely to go as far as southern European countries want.

Belgian Prime Minister De Croo will receive the Spanish leader at his official residence in Brussels at 5.30pm, the Belgian government said. Prior to meeting his Belgian counterpart, Sánchez will meet French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée Palace in Paris.

Both meetings are part of the tour that Sánchez started this week to convince European leaders to support Spain's position in the European Council on the energy situation resulting from the crisis in Ukraine.
