Belgian airports cancel all departing flights on Tuesday due to general strike

Both Brussels and Charleroi airports have cancelled all departing passenger flights on Tuesday. This is due to a general strike in response to government budget cuts. In Brussels, flights are cancelled due to an expected shortage of security staff.
"Brussels Airport has just received information from the external security provider G4S that, contrary to previous communication, they cannot guarantee any staffing for the security check on Tuesday," the airport told Belga. "This means that no departing flights can take place".
Passengers in arriving flights should experience less disruption, as they will not have to go through security. But it is likely that many arriving flights will also be cancelled, as planes that do not take off cannot return either.
"We very much regret the impact of the union action and the late information and cancellations, but they are necessary to avoid long waits and cancellations on the day itself," the airport said. The airlines will inform the affected passengers themselves.
No arrivals in Charleroi
Last week, Charleroi airport already cancelled all flights departing on Tuesday. But on Monday evening, an airport spokesman announced that all flights arriving in Charleroi on that day are also cancelled.
Tuesday's strike is organised by the Christian union ACV and the socialist union ABVV. They are protesting against the government's budget cuts. In addition to the airports, the strike will severely disrupt public transport and shipping.
