Average annual energy bill surges to over 9,000 euros in Flanders
Flemish residents who have to sign a new energy contract on the commercial market in September will face record-high energy bills. The estimated annual bill for an average family will total 9,210 euros, according to figures released by Flemish energy regulator VREG on Thursday.
The estimated annual price for natural gas has reached 5,954.07 euros in the Belgian region, while the annual price for electricity has risen to 3,256.63 euros. This amounts to an average monthly energy bill of over 760 euros. The VREG figures are annual averages that apply to people who have to sign an energy contract on the commercial market in September. People who qualify for a social energy tariff will pay considerably less.
The record-breaking prices are substantially higher than in August. Compared to last month, the annual difference amounts to 1,100 euros for electricity and over 2,160 euros for natural gas.
The unprecedented prices are a result of the historic price increase for natural gas in the European market. The new VREG figures do not, however, take into account possible measures planned by different governments to reduce energy bills.
