Atlético Madrid buy Belgium's Arthur Vermeeren for 27m euros

The transfer of teenage Belgian footballer Arthur Vermeeren to Atlético Madrid has been completed. The Spanish club will pay Belgian champions Royal Antwerp FC 27 million euros for the 18-year-old, who has signed a contract for 6.5 seasons.

Midfielder Vermeeren was recently voted Talent of the Year at the annual Golden Shoe awards. The transfer is effective immediately, meaning he has already played his last game for Antwerp.

Atlético Madrid reached a deal with Antwerp on Tuesday and have now agreed terms with the player, who flew to Spain on Thursday for contract negotiations and medical tests.

Antwerp originally wanted at least 30 million euros for Vermeeren, but accepted a lower figure after intense negotiations. The deal was struck quickly as Antwerp are facing a liquidity crisis.

Vermeeren will be joining Axel Witsel, the former Belgian international, at Atlético.
