Around 30 Belgian ambassadors to change post in 2025

Around 30 Belgian diplomats will be changing their posts in 2025, writes Le Soir on Thursday. Among the countries that will see new ambassadors are Italy, Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Mexico.

December is the traditional month for announcing diplomatic moves. This announcement does not concern all diplomatic staff: most diplomats change their post on average every three years, or four if their posting is extended.

In 2025, around 30 Belgian ambassadors will be moving, writes Le Soir, including to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan, Mali, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Serbia, Mexico and Sweden. Kinshasa, London, Jerusalem, Moscow and Rome will also get new consuls general.

For example, Pierre-Emmanuel De Bauw, ambassador to Italy, San Marino and Malta, will return to his home country next year. After two postings abroad, Belgian diplomats have to return to the FPS Foreign Affairs in Brussels before they can represent Belgium in a new country.

Frédéric Bernard, who headed Charles Michel's cabinet during his five-year term as president of the European Council, will become ambassador to the US in the coming days. Jan Hoogmartens, who previously served as ambassador to China, was the first choice for the post, but he left to join the cabinet of European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib.

Not all names are known yet: 25 diplomatic and consular posts remain to be filled, writes Le Soir.
