AP Moller to build fossil-free plastics factory in port of Antwerp
Danish industrial group AP Moller plans to invest 1.5 billion euros in a new plastics factory in the port of Antwerp, writes De Standaard. The plant will run on green methanol and promises fossil-free plastics.
AP Moller's new subsidiary, Vioneo, aims to build a plant capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of plastics a year on the Vopak Energy Park site in the port of Antwerp.
"We hope to start a revolution comparable to what Tesla did for the electric car"
Vioneo has developed a new production process to manufacture polypropylene and polythene on a large scale using imported green methanol as a raw material. This should guarantee fossil-free plastics and very low nitrogen emissions.
"We hope to start a revolution comparable to what Tesla did for the electric car," Jan Secher, chairman of Vioneo, told De Standaard.
A final decision on the project will be made in a year. The plant will employ 250 people and should completed by 2028.
