Antwerp to face Barcelona, Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk in first-ever Champions League campaign
Royal Antwerp will face Barcelona, Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League group stage in the coming months. The Belgian champions were drawn in Group H in Monaco on Thursday.
Antwerp qualified for the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night in the second leg of their final qualifying round tie against AEK Athens. The victory secured a place in the group stage for the first time in the history of Belgium's oldest club.
Coach Mark van Bommel won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006. "It's a fomer club of mine, so that does make it special," he said.
Thursday's draw also established Group F as the "group of death", with PSG, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Newcastle United.
The group stage begins on 19 and 20 September, with the round of 16 in February. The final will be played at Wembley Stadium in London on 1 June 2024.
