Antwerp launches fund for young artists

Antwerp is setting up a fund to support young artists starting their careers. The city will provide 200,000 euros in 2024 and 2025.

The Fund for New Makers is reminiscent of the project grants for young artists that the council scrapped last year, a decision that was met with criticism and weeks of protests from the wider cultural sector.

"The Fund for New Makers is an accessible subsidy scheme that offers the opportunity to develop artistic practice in a concrete project," says councillor Nabilla Ait Daoud (N-VA). "It encourages the further professionalisation of artistic practice in Antwerp and makes it easier for arts organisations to engage even more with new talent."

Young artists can apply until 31 October for a project to be realised from 1 February 2024. The project must be carried out with an existing cultural institution in Antwerp. The cultural centres will jointly decide on the distribution of the funds.
