American Indy brings autonomous racing car challenge to Belgium
The American organisation Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), known for organising competitions between autonomous racing cars, is launching a spin-off in Belgium. The new project will be based in Limburg, supported by investments from the investment company LRM and insurer Ethias.
IAC, LRM and Ethias are investing 5 million euros in the venture, Aidoptation. The company aims to develop commercial applications, leveraging the knowledge and intellectual property accumulated by IAC.
"Indiana and Flanders share a progressive ecosystem in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and the automotive industry, strengthening collaboration since 2023," said Flemish minister president Matthias Diependaele.
"This headquarters reinforces our global image as an innovative knowledge region and proves that transatlantic cooperation delivers tangible results."
The robot racing initiative will operate from DronePort, at the former military airport of Brustem near Sint-Truiden. The facility has a 3km runway with multiple branches, providing ideal infrastructure for autonomous vehicle testing.
Flanders was chosen for its strategic location near innovation hubs and the presence of international institutions in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
