Alexander De Croo to head UN Development Programme

Former Belgian prime minister Alexander De Croo will become the head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The news was confirmed to Belga by several sources on Tuesday.
UN secretary-general António Guterres has proposed De Croo for the top post. His appointment still requires formal approval by the UNDP board and a subsequent vote in the UN General Assembly.
“For the appointment procedure, we refer, as is proper, to the UN Secretary-General,” said De Croo’s spokesperson.
Open VLD chairman Frédéric De Gucht was quick to congratulate his party colleague. “Immensely proud that a Belgian liberal is taking on the third-highest position at the UN. A wonderful recognition of your dedication, vision, and leadership. You were important to our country, and now you will be important to the world,” he said.
