Aid group warns Lebanon risks becoming “new Gaza” amid rising violence

Lebanon risks becoming “the new Gaza” as Israel steps up its military attacks, according to the Belgian solidarity organisation 11.11.11.
The warning comes as more than 900 people have reportedly been killed, over 2,100 injured and around one million forced to flee their homes.
The organisation says there are clear parallels with Gaza Strip. Large-scale evacuation orders have been issued for areas south of the Zahrani River, as well as parts of southern Beirut and the Bekaa Valley, covering about 14% of Lebanon’s territory.
It also claims displaced civilians are being prevented from returning home, which it describes as forced displacement. Israeli forces have carried out heavy air strikes on villages in southern Lebanon and residential areas in Beirut, alongside the launch of ground operations this week.
Some Israeli politicians have made direct comparisons. Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said southern Beirut could resemble Khan Younis, much of which has been destroyed. Lawmaker Tzvi Sukkot has also called for parts of southern Lebanon to be destroyed and annexed.
The organisation criticised what it described as a weak and one-sided response from European leaders. It urged the Belgian government to push for a joint diplomatic effort with Arab and Gulf states aimed at securing a regional ceasefire.
It also called for increased humanitarian aid through a United Nations emergency fund for Lebanon and stronger support for local relief groups. In addition, it urged the Flemish government to make a temporary arms embargo on Israel permanent.
“Those who remain silent on Lebanon today risk seeing a second Gaza tomorrow,” said Middle East expert Willem Staes.
