Aalst carnival draws over 200,000 festive revellers

More than 200,000 people attended this year’s Aalst Carnival, making it one of the biggest editions in years. The three-day event, known for its satire and elaborate floats, enjoyed sunny weather and a festive atmosphere.
Mayor Christoph D’Haese praised the smooth organisation and the work of emergency services. Prins Sjalen, the carnival’s symbolic ruler, led the celebrations after receiving the key to the city.
Tuesday’s Voil Jeanetten parade, where men dress in old women’s clothes, was a highlight, with 5,000 participants taking over the streets. The event ended with the traditional burning of the carnival effigy.

Despite the large crowds, incidents were minimal. Police made seven arrests, mostly for public disturbances, and recorded minor alcohol and drug offences. The Red Cross treated 131 people, mainly for alcohol-related issues, while firefighters responded to a single call-out for smouldering fireworks.
Next year's festival will take place from 15-17 February, with preparations already under way.
