3x3 basketball World Cup starts on Tuesday in Antwerp

On Tuesday, the seventh edition of the 3x3 world championship of basketball will start on the Groenplaats in Antwerp. The tournament will end on Sunday with the finals. The Belgian city was supposed to host the World Cup in 2020, but that was cancelled due to the pandemic. The World Cup will be the first big competition since the debut of the sport at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In both the men's and the women's singles, twenty countries are competing for the title; at the previous World Cup, in 2019 in Amsterdam, the American men and the Chinese women won the finals. The Olympic gold last year was won by the men of Latvia and the women of the United States.

From Tuesday until Friday the group matches will be played. The group winner qualifies for the quarter-finals. The numbers two and three still have to survive the round of 16. The eighth and quarter finals will be played on Saturday, the semi-finals and finals follow on Sunday. The women will fight for the gold medals at 20:55, the men at 21:30.
