28th edition of Theater aan Zee opens in Ostend

The 28th edition of Theater aan Zee (TAZ) opens in Ostend on Wednesday. The festival runs for 10 days and features 600 performances at 38 locations across the coastal city.
The opening night in the Casino Foyer of the Kursaal will feature a concert by 101-year-old actress Alice Toen. During The Century of Then, she will perform a mix of her own songs and covers, including work by Jacques Brel, accompanied by musicians such as Bjorn Eriksson.
Also on the programme for opening night is the premiere of the TAZ soundtrack, sung and composed by Farnoosh. Philosopher Jean Paul Van Bendegem will deliver a short lecture on the theme of time, which serves as the central focus of this year’s edition.

Artistic director Cindy Godefroi and co-programmer Dominique Collet have built an extensive programme around this theme, including several premieres. Among them is Queen of the Flies, a loose adaptation of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies by the Ghent-based collective Camping Sunset.
A collective dance performance by Jotka Bauwens, set to music by Farnoosh Khodadadeh, will also feature daily throughout the festival and debuts on the opening night. The public can learn the dance each day at the Kursaal. Last year, Bauwens performed a duet with her mother to Arno’s Les Yeux de ma mère.
