2026 World Cup: Belgium face crucial World Cup clash against New Zealand

Belgium face New Zealand in a crucial final Group G match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday in Vancouver, with their place in the knockout stage still hanging in the balance.

The Red Devils have drawn both of their opening matches, holding Egypt to a 1-1 draw before playing out a goalless stalemate with Iran. Those results leave Belgium with two points and no control over their fate heading into the final group game.

A win over New Zealand would keep Belgium in the race for the knockout stage, although their final position will also depend on the result between Egypt and Iran. Depending on the outcomes, Belgium could still finish first, second or qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. A defeat would eliminate them from the tournament.

Belgium have struggled in front of goal, scoring only once so far through an own goal forced by Romelu Lukaku. They have failed to score in six of their last eight matches at major tournaments, increasing the pressure on head coach Rudi Garcia.

Garcia is expected to make changes to his starting line-up after another disappointing display against Iran. Defender Nathan Ngoy is suspended, while winger Jeremy Doku is unlikely to start after illness and a recent trip home for the birth of his son. Lukaku is fit again but may not be ready to play a full match.

New Zealand also need a victory to keep their World Cup hopes alive after taking one point from their opening two matches, drawing 2-2 with Iran before losing 3-1 to Egypt.
