17-year-old appeals preventive house arrest on New Year's Eve

A 17-year-old boy has appealed to the Council of State against the preventive house arrest imposed on him by Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever on New Year's Eve.

The Gazet van Antwerpen reported the news on Friday, and the mayor's office confirmed it. The council is expected to make a decision today.

As in previous years, the city of Antwerp placed 47 young repeat offenders under preventive house arrest in mid-December to ensure a "trouble-free New Year's Eve".

On New Year's Eve, the police will check to ensure the young people comply with the house arrest. The identities of those placed under house arrest were not disclosed.
