4,000 demonstrators gather in Brussels in support of Global Sumud Flotilla

More than 4,000 protesters gathered at the Foreign Affairs ministry in Brussels on Thursday afternoon, condemning the Israeli army’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. The demonstration is a repeat of a spontaneous gathering on Wednesday evening.

Protestors are also demanding an immediate end to the blockade of Gaza and Israel’s policy of starvation towards the Palestinians.

On Wednesday, the Israeli navy intercepted the convoy of about 40 ships heading for Gaza. Footage shows armed Israeli soldiers boarding the boats. During the intervention, several members of the Belgian delegation were arrested, as was Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

The demonstrators are demanding action from the Belgian government and condemnation of the Israeli intervention by Foreign minister Maxime Prévot. Earlier this week, Prévot made it clear that the citizens’ initiative was taking unnecessary risks and that Belgium would not offer any additional support.

At around 17:00, demonstrators, many wearing masks, spontaneously marched via Avenue de la Toison d’Or and Square De Meeûs to Place du Luxembourg, where the European Parliament is located. They plan to move towards the European Commission. Large numbers of police are present.

Demonstrations are also being held in Liège, Charleroi, Namur, Ghent and Antwerp.
